Q & A » Interview: Ashleigh Frost

We caught up with Ashleigh Frost to see what's in store for 2015 and how she's prepping for the WBFF Pro-Am taking place in Canada, April 2015.

Q: What's the biggest lesson you learnt from 2014?

2014 was undoubtedly one of the toughest years for me. I learnt that you cannot expect people to believe in you, if you don't believe in yourself. The only person that is responsible for where you are is you. So take responsibility for your dreams and goals, and action them if you want them to become a reality.

Q: Where and when will you be competing this year?

The Montreal (Canada) WBFF Pro-Am takes place on the 4th of April 2015 and later this year the WBFF World Champs in Las Vegas, the 16th of August 2015.

Q: Who are you sponsored by?

Pharmafreak International
Fitmark Bags International
Brand-ID
SKLZ training equipment
Mizuno Running shoes
SKINZ Compression Clothing

Q: Your top training and nutritional tips?

I always tell any new client that anyone can walk into a gym and train, the real magic happens when you start to focus on how you train. Form over load, every time! Rather go light and do it right than go heavy and your technique is terrible which could result in an injury. Also, don't jump right into a program with the highest intensity, if your body is not conditioned and accustomed to a certain degree of stress, you could seriously injure yourself. Rather work your way up by challenging yourself every week to go heavier. It is also important to know that you need to alternate periods of high intensity with periods of low intensity.

Nutrition wise I would say always stick to the basics. If it wasn't on the earth on the 7th day when God said "it is good", then chances are it is not good...Lol! All jokes aside though, whole natural foods are the ultimate source of fuel and energy. Try and keep at least 80% of your meals whole foods, and then the rest will be made up in supplementation.

Q: What advice do you have for girls looking to get into the fitness industry?

The most important thing to think about first are your reasons why, why do you want to be a fitness model? You need to evaluate your reasons and know that if you are doing it for attention, fame or to prove a point to someone else, you are going to hit a wall. Fitness is not a destination, it is a way of life and a code of self respect, discipline and hard work. There is a reason that 'bodybuilding' is one of the toughest sports in the world, physically, psychologically and emotionally! Make sure that you are in a good place before you decide to pursue a career in the fitness world because it can either make or break you. The reason I say this is because you put yourself out there to be judged and criticised by anyone and everyone. You need to be strong enough to handle the bad comments and criticism but humble enough to handle the good feedback.

Q: What's a day like in the life of Ashleigh?

Well, currently I'm in full prep mode. This means I get up at 3:30am, zombie to the bathroom (lol) get dressed, have my morning shake (Pharmafreak Ripped Protein) and my Ripped Freak Fat burner. My husband and I then spend a period of time doing Bible study and praying for the day ahead. By 5am I am on the stepper or treadmill for a good hour. I eat at around 7am, which is then followed by clients until 9am. I then do my second workout of the day which finishes at around 11 am. I'll then have another meal and a quick shower, then it's straight onto time with my online clients as well as some of the other projects I have going. In between all of this I'll have another meal and run any errands. From about 3pm onwards I have clients again through to 7pm, somewhere between these clients I find time to eat. Once I'm done with my clients it's home time followed by dinner, a bath and some quality time and Bible study with my hubby.

Q: What kind of training do you do?

At this stage of my prep my training is quite a good mix. I train heavy weights with low repetitions but also do some specific exercises with low weights and high reps, but I also do high weights with high reps. It really all depends on the muscle group and whether it is a dominant group or a targeted group to balance an area out. A crucial part of my training is a full body plyometric based workout. There is nothing better than plyometrics, it's the holy grail of full body activation if you ask me. My cardio is a mix of steady state and interval training, depending on which day I am on.

Q: What do you do in your free time?

Free time? Can you eat that (LOL). I always joke about eating being my day job (because I'm always eating), the rest is just for fun. If and when I do find that I have some free time I like to do some research on concepts regarding training and nutrition but I also love to just relax with my husband and enjoy each other's company. Also if the time allows, we often enjoy going to watch a movie and just winding down.
